First person shooter, check, killing Nazis, check, futuristic setting for WOII, check. Indeed, seventeen years after Wolfenstein 3D got released for the first time spy B.J. Blazkowicz is back on the road to kill Nazis. With an arsenal of weapons and some mysterious powers it's up to you to bring down the Third Reich.

The game starts with a scene where Blazkowicz does a mission on the hijacked battleship Tripitz. During this mission he finds an artefact called Thule Medallion which, in combination with special crystals, can evoke alien powers. Once back at his base, Blazkowicz has the mysterious thing examined and gets sent to the German town of Isenstadt to find out more about it. It comes down to you being the chosen one to again save the world that's plagued by dark powers.

As player you dwell around Isenstadt which will function as a portal between the different areas and missions. After succesfully completing some missions you get crystals at your disposal that give you some nice powers when combined with the Thule Medallion. As such there's "The Veil" which gives you additional speed and power and as you progress more crystals will be found that can help you bring down the Third Reich. You'll be able to slow down time, see your enemies' weak spots, raise a shield and shoot extremely accurately and powerful.

The extra powers are all nice but where Wolfenstein truly shines is in the weapons, more specifically the sound and impact of them. You have a reasonable arsenal going from the usual MP40 and KAR98 to the more sci-fi oriented weaponry. The balance between ordinary and sci-fi is far to be found as with a couple of shots from your particle cannon a couple of hundred nazis will drop down. Next to that all weapons can be upgraded with scopes, ammo, silencers and so on. This of course isn't free and you can use gold you find during your missions to pay with at the black market. The upgrades do have an effect so it's wise to spend your gold carefully.

The controls are solid and can best be compared with the Call of Duty series. Everything runs fluidly but still the game felt a bit thin. Maybe it's me but a science fiction shooter where someone has to save the world has passed by so many times already. Also graphically the game somewhat disappoints. The modified Doom 3 engine clearly isn't modern anymore as the modifications can't hide that the game looks kinda disappointing and oldfashioned.

Wolfenstein wouldn't be Wolfenstein without a decent multiplayer but again it's very thin in this case. There's three modes; Team Deathmatch, Objective and a variation to Objective with a time limit. There's three different classes which each have specific weapons and Veil powers.

Wolfenstein has ended up as a shadow of what it once was. Graphically it can't compete with other new titles, there's nothing revolutionary in the gameplay and the storyline - for as far as it's present - is hardly interesting. The game can only be suggested to those that are just looking for a simple shooter or want to shoot some Nazis for a couple of seconds.

PRO

  • Goode and swift controls
  • Sound and impact of the weapons
  • Weapons upgrades

CON

  • Weak story
  • Pathetic multiplayer
  • Bad AI
  • Graphically below standard
