Way too early in the morning a courier dropped of Yoshi's Universal Gravitation. Cool animal on the front and funny colors, clearly something I have to try out myself.
First of all I look through the accompanying manual and don't quite get what they mean with wiggling your screen. Luckily that becomes clear once starting up the game. Quickly calibrating the gravitation module by following the instuctions on screen and you get the feeling already by turning the gameboy left and right. The function really becomes clear once playing though.
The first thing I notice is that the graphics are amongst the best I've seen on GBA until now. In a funny way, the story gets told, what has gone wrong and what you have to do to fix things.
Bowser, the bad guy from many Nintendo stories, has done it again. Hongo, the big book ghost, has the possibility to trap several characters in his big image book. Unfortunately, Hoshi doesn't only capture Bowser, but all of Yoshi's island along with him. Now it's up to you to read through the book and lock Bowser on the last page so that maybe Hongo can be pursuaded to let Yoshi's island and its inhabitants go. Then the game really starts.
It's a true platform/adventure game, you need to get through different fields and fulfill mission objectives. You each time get a goal like collecting 3 appels in each field or collect at least 50 credits. Also to clear a level you'll need to get for instance 4 out of 6 fields cleared. With this, you can keep playing and don't get stuck on one field that's a bit too hard.
Still, I noted that after a couple of levels the game starts to bore. There's little variation and things only get more difficult. It's a very original game, but after a while it still remains awkward to tilt your gameboy.
As usual, the sound is funny and happy, but tends to get boring pretty fast.
What I again noticed is that the game gets a 3+ rating but then your 3 year old needs to be able to read and understand English.
As such, this game has a very original concept, but unfortunately the finishing is too repetitive to keep one interested.
