I'm a flightsim lover, I feel perfect with games like Lock-On: Modern Air Combat and the ordinary Flight Sim series. Some time ago I got the long expected Over G Fighters in my mailbox and immediately threw it in my X360 as I couldn't wait to try it out. In Over G Fighters you fight against a terrorist organisation that is trying to kill the world. You do this on three different locations: North-America, Asia and Africa and you can choose between a fleet of over 30 planes. Sounds promising!

Over G Fighters is a game from renowned publisher Ubisoft. After their hit on PC, Lock-On: Modern Air Combat, it was time to conquer the consoles with their aerial power and they tried with this newcomer. As stated in the introduction, expectations are high with this game. It could become a competitor to the known PS2-series Ace Combat... but Over G Fighters clearly didn't succeed. The only point where it manages to overcome its PS2-counterpart are the graphics (and that's pretty logical seeing it's a next-gen title). Unfortunately even there this game isn't perfect... the planes and armaments are beautiful and finished to the detail, but the effects tend to crush everything in a negative sense. Explosions look like a camping fire and the smoke looks all but pretty. These are more things you would expect from a 3 year old game. Next to that there are also the very monotone and therefore boring surroundings that add to the lesser atmosphere in this game.

Boredom doesn't only strike in the graphics but also in the gameplay. It's just too simple (especially in single player). If you've got long distrance missiles packed, there's no possibility that the enemy can pose a threat at all; they get shot out of the air before they've even seen you. In multiplayer this is of course different as the chances are more equal which results in more interesting dogfights and makes the game fun after all!

There's 2 modes in multiplayer, Arena and Versus. The end goal of both is the same; kill the opposition. The difference is more in the amount of teams. In Arena there's four while Versus there's only two. For the rest it's just plain shooting, shooting, and more shooting...

In single player there's more to do but not that much more to be honest. Of course you've got the Scenario Mode where you simply follow a storyline and with each mission you can choose your wingman out of 5 different characters with their own specialties. This mode isn't exactly big (just like the rest of the game) so you can choose to just hand around a bit and do some random shooting in the Challenge mode although there's little "Challenge" to it. Together with your chosen airplane you're dropped on a map and have to find some foes. Boring? Yes indeed! Again there's little opposition and this ruins the experience. It even happens often that the AI planes don't even take the trouble to light flares (against heat-seeking missiles). It's like they're asking to get shot down! In the end, the only real difficult part of this game is making a perfect landing as this is where 70% of the time you'll fail your mission.

An sich, this could have become a good game, but unfortunately there was spent way too little time in the AI and surroundings. Also the balancing could have used some more effort which is proven by the strength of long-range missiles. You have effective air superiority and that's a sad thing as it takes away all tension and possible challenge out of this title. If you're a real flight sim fan this certainly isn't something you need to get. For those that want to do some occasional dogfighting without thinking this is your thing. Simply said: the game is easily mastered without having to know anything about planes, what do you want more as a novice?

PRO

  • Simple
  • Beautiful planes
  • Good for beginners

CON

  • Boring surroundings
  • Stupid AI
  • Too easy
  • Doesn't fullfil expectations
