Malcolm Reynolds is the captain of the Firefly-class ship Serenity. Together with his crew he makes a living of scavanging ships and from time to time doing a small robbery or other illegal things. Still, they’ve been relatively successful in their way of life and have managed to stay out of the hands of the Alliance and the terrible cannibalistic Reavers. When Reynolds accepts to take a young doctor Simon and his telepathic sister River on board however, he doesn’t realise what he’s getting himself into. The Alliance wants to get River back, dead or alive, and by taking her on board, Reynolds has gotten their attention. An assassin is sent out to retrieve Inara and it looks like there’s no way of escape for the crew of the Serenity…
Sound and Vision:
The image quality is not perfect as the contrast is a bit dark but for the rest there’s nothing to complain. The amount of detail is high and except for a little aliasing we didn’t spot any compression errors at all.
The soundtrack is very impressive with good use of all channels and also the subwoofer gets a very big piece of the action. For a Dolby Digital track, this is one of the best I’ve heard in a long time.

Usually I would give you an idea of what each extra contains but this time I’m going to do things a little differently. All the extras show how much effort and dedication the makers (including the cast) have made to get this movie filmed. One could even say that this DVD is a tribute to both the TV series Firefly as well as Joss Whedon (creator) and not the least: the fans of the series. The extras are certainly worth watching as they show you all the difficulties the cast & crew have had to go through as well as the supporty they got from the community surrounding Firefly. Great stuff!
Serenity is based on the cancelled TV series Firefly by Joss Whedon who’s also known for Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Although one might think that Buffy and Angel are series mostly targeted at teenagers, Firefly on the other hand is a fully fledged top notch sci-fi series that combines science fiction with western elements. Although some people might find this a weird combination, it does work.
With the cancellation of the series, both the makers and the fans got very upset and Joss Whedon has worked very hard for a long time to get a movie made based on the series just as tribute to the fans. That movie has finally arrived in the form of Serenity and it rocks! Whedon has done a terrific job with a limited budget and while nobody would have ever thought that a cancelled TV series would get a movie, Whedon did pull it off.
The DVD contains everything a big budget movie should have including terrific image & sound and a ton of interesting extras. In fact, this is one of the best releases I’ve seen in quite some time. Sci-fi lovers should certainly not let this one pass by!
