Space Adventure Cobra
Jane is a bounty hunter who hunts the most vicious criminals in the universe who usually belong to The Guild, a criminal organisation that has managed to take control of most governments in our galaxy and is lead by Crystal Boy. After her latest job, she hangs out in a pub where she meets up with a rather strange guy who claims to be Cobra, the most wanted pirate in the universe who’s supposed to be dead already for two years. Although she doesn’t immediately believe he’s really Cobra, she does start to get feelings for him and when during a fight he transforms his arm into a psycho-cannon it’s clear he hasn’t lied.
Instead of trying to kill him, Jane falls in love with Cobra and tells him that she’s in fact part of a triplet who together form the last queen of the planet Myras.
Once upon a time, Myras was a great planet that roamed the galaxy freely but it got infected by a space cloud and all life on it died. Jane and her sisters are all that remain of Myras but in order to return she has to find love and merge back with her sisters to become queen again and pilot the planet. Now that she’s fallen in love with Cobra, she can go back and claim her throne again after having been reunited with her sisters. However, Crystal Boy has managed to capture Jane’s sister Catherine and made her fall in love with him with the purpose of taking control of Myras and using it for the destruction of our galaxy.
Sound and Vision:
The image suffers a bit from damages and scratches on the print which is a pitty but understandable seeing as this anime dates from 1982.
The sound comes in surround but don’t expect something spectacular. Some use of the surrounds is present but the sound remains a bit hollow.
Extras:
None
Conclusion:
Space Adventure Cobra is a typical manga that combines action and violence with sexy women and sex. Unfortunately the childish and over-expression of the characters is also present which is a bit of a letdown. However, this doesn’t come as a surprise seeing when this animation was created. The storyline as such is pretty good but the hero (Cobra) seems almost invincible. During the entire movie he hardly gets a scratch which decreases the quality of the manga. Still, Cobra is a nice manga for the fans and lovers of the genre will have a great time watching this one.
