Interview with Peter Molyneux
There are not only booth babes and gamers on an expo like E3. You can also run in to some big guys. I had the honour to meet Peter Molyneux, the creative brain behind Fable, The Movies, Black&White and lots more. Unfortunately, he didn’t want to talk about the content of Fable 2, so we asked him some other questions.
Is it less stressing to make a successor of a game?
Why the successor? Is that something you wanted to do or did Microsoft ask for it?
Isn’t it enormously frustrating when there’s a big difference between your visions and the final result?
Do you still have the same level of freedom, now that Lionhead is taken over by Microsoft?
Where will games be in five years?
Is it less stressing to make a successor of a game?
,,If you make a successor, then you have the choice. You can start relaxed, keeping in mind you know what you’re doing. Or you can be very ambitious and take on a huge challenge. We have chosen that last option. In the first place, we want to correct some things. Of course, freedom, characters and consequences will stay very important. We just want to make Fable even better. People had the feeling they played something that was never done before. That’s the feeling we want to reach again. Furthermore, we want to surprise people. One or two of the features will be really big ones. You will think: “That’s crazy, I had never expected that. Why did they put that in a game?” But a successor needs the energy that comes from such an innovation more than anything else. In the teaser video, there are about ten hints that refer to the surprises.’’
Why the successor? Is that something you wanted to do or did Microsoft ask for it?
,,We always planned to make a complete story of Fable. I see it like being half way of the story arc. We made an RPG, just because it isn’t like a Black&White or a The Movies. With an RPG, you can build further.’’
,,What wasn’t planned, is the fact that playing Fable learns you something about yourself. You learn about life and what it all means. Moreover, you can build a relationship with your friends. Playing videogames with my friends is something I like very much. Online gaming, friends list, achievements,... are a big step forward. The past eighteen months something really important happened. You notice it if you look at the new hardware, like the Wii controller. People play in a different way. They used to play on the pc, but now consoles become more and more popular. The way of playing becomes more important then how fast the game goes.’’

Isn’t it enormously frustrating when there’s a big difference between your visions and the final result?
,,Oh yes, definitely. Making up and developing games is like living a nightmare. You have a vision in your head that you’re constantly trying to grab and express. With the years, you get closer and closer, but you are never able to reach it. The tools offer a lot more possibilities now, that works motivating. I especially want gamers to have the same feeling of complete astonishment when they play the game. They have to be emotionally involved, they have to care about the game world.’’
Do you still have the same level of freedom, now that Lionhead is taken over by Microsoft?
,,We want to be inventive and creative, that’s the actual reason we did it. Lionhead wants to concentrate on making fantastic games. Surviving as a developer is extremely difficult. Your choices are sometimes influenced by other things and that’s not good for the games. Lionhead tries to handle it in a professional manner. Moreover, we share the same vision. Honestly, of course some things will change. But as long as we reach our goal, I don’t see any problems.’’
Where will games be in five years?
,,It will change drastically. If you look at previous E3’s, you’ll notice a lot has changed already. There’s a saying I often use: the world expects too much in one year and not enough in ten years. In five year, we will be in the middle of the next gigantic revolution, which will be totally unexpected. Life and online possibilities will play an even bigger part in the games we play, when we play them, where, how, who with,… The hardware starts to change, the place where we game and lots more. The next five years will be incredible! I only hope I will still be here in five years.’’
