Tech Time Special: Logitech - Designed to move you 2006

Special by Devilke
Logitech celebrates its twenty-fifth birthday this year. After all these years, design is still a keyword and the main goal is still to make the use of things easier and better. At the Designed to move you 2006 press conference, they showed us the new products for this fall. Some of those really got our attention, so we’ll put a brief summary here.

MX Revolution (99,99 euro)
The eye-catcher of the day was without any doubt this new revolutionary mouse. User comments learnt them there were two aspect they could work on. The first was the surface coverage of a mouse. People want it to work anywhere, even when sitting at a wooden table in the garden for example. A second remark was they wanted to scroll faster. Moreover, technology evolves. Back in the old days, you could run one program, but nowadays pc are strong enough to keep five or six applications running.

All this added to the making of a new mouse, called the MX Revolution. Logitech calls the mouse “designed for the enthusiast” and we have to admit it looks kind of weird at first. However, the technology is rather impressive. There is a little motor build inside, so that you can switch between normal scrolling and hyper-fast scrolling. This way, you can fly through long documents. Besides changing between this modes manually, there’s also the SmartShift Technology that detects your current application and automatically applies the scrolling mode that fits best. Other features are the document Quick-Flip and the Search button. The first one makes it easier to copy/paste or compare between documents, the second feature makes it possible to highlight a word or phrase and then press the button to immediately display results from your favourite search engine.

Speed will test the mouse extensively and will tell us whether is as good as it sounds in a review soon.

VX Revolution (79,99 euro)
The little brother of the MX Revolution, with an ergonomic design more suitable for notebooks. It is still possible to scroll very fast and switch manually between hyper-fast or normal, but the SmartShift technology is not included. This version has a zoom-out and a zoom-in button on top in stead of the document Quick-Flip wheel on the side. However, the Search button is still there and there’s also room to store the micro-receiver.

Z-10 Interactive Speakers (149,99 euro)

Market research also learns us that there’s an enormous shift from desktops to notebooks. If you still think people buy a notebook because they want to be mobile and take it anywhere they go, then you’re wrong. Only 7 percent of the buyers do that. No less than 82 percent uses a notebook at home, sitting on the couch in the living room, while lying in their bed or eating in the kitchen. Therefore, notebook solutions have become an important issue.

Well, if you keep it at home, you may as well buy decent speakers for your notebook! The Z-10 Interactive Speakers is a 2.0 audio system with a gloss-black finish and touch-sensitive controls. These allow you to access multimedia functions such as Play, Pause, Volume,…You can also choose between the four customizable Internet radio presets. The graphic LCD shows you track information like artist, song title, and other useful information. The good news is, a single USB cable carries both audio and track information from your notebook. If you want to move to the couch and put your notebook on your lap, you just have to unplug one cable.

QuickCam UltraVision (149,99 euro)

This 1,3 megapixel webcam is one of the first to use a glass lens for better image quality. Lighting is optimised with the RightLight 2 technology. If you have a lot of backlight or a window on the side, the webcam will automatically compensate the bright and dark area’s so you have a great view. It also supports the High-Definition video format, thus allowing people to create video clips and watch them in a wide-screen format. To make it all a little more fun, there is software included with the Open Season theme. You always wanted to know what you would look like as a bear or an alien, now is the time. Another fun possibility is sharing your photos with the people you’re communicating with, simply during the video stream.

Don’t you just hate it when your hands get all sweaty during a game? Well, if we may believe Logitech, that’s all history now. This new Chillstream controller has an exclusive new technology with an integrated fan. Nevertheless, it still has the same dimensions. Three small gaps in the rubber grips let air circulate around

your fingers, dumb and palm of the hand. We didn’t get a change to test it, but Logitech says you can hardly hear the sound of the fan. Three speed settings allow you to adjust the ventilation force: high, low or off. With this controller, you can game on your pc as long as you want!
