Tech Time Special: Logitech MX3000 Desktop Set Review

Special by Speed
Logitech's MX desktop set series is targeted at multimedia enthusiasts and gamers. We've recently tested the Logitech G5 mouse but how does the MX3000 desktop set compare to this game-mouse? Let's find out!

First up is the keyboard. The looks are nice and the zero-tilt degree design is one of the best features Logitech ever developed. Although the wrist support is a piece of plastic (unlike with Microsoft's Wireless Desktop Elite) it does its job and can be removed if you don't like it.

All necessary multimedia buttons like volume control, forward, backward, play, pause, etc are present, just like shortcuts for email, messenger, digital media library.

On the left side is of course a scrollwheel which also has a tilt-function and buttons to immediately go to the top or bottom of a page. These buttons however, don't always respond quite as good as they should but since most people use their mouse to go through pages, I won't take this too bad. Also a button for the "back" function is present so 90% of all functions you have on your mouse are also on the keyboard, even a zoom-function has been added.

People that love a real "click" in the buttons will probably find this keyboard a bit soft but personally I liked the feeling a lot.

As we're used from Logitech, the accompanying driver allows for full programming of the F-keys although F1-F8 are already pre-set.

The accompanying mouse is the MX600. My wife uses Logitech's MX3100 which has a very similar keyboard but the MX1000 mouse instead of this one and I must say that I'm really surprised that Logitech has decided to stop selling that set as I personally prefer the MX1000 over the MX600.

The reason for my preference isn't because the MX600 is slower than the MX1000 but lays mostly in the details.

The MX600 is quite light and unlike with the G-series of mice you can't change the weigth. Also, on the left side of the left mouse button, there's a zoom button present but you really need to be careful when using it that you don't accidentally click the left mouse button. Really unhandy!

Also I found that the mouse is a bit too slick. Gamers want to have a good grip on their input device and for that the MX600 isn't really ideal.

The two side-button on the other hand are a better implementation than on the MX1000. They're easy to be used but not that sensitive that you might push them accidentally. Also their positioning is quite good.

The MX600 is a lot smaller than either the G5 or the MX1000 and this results in gamer with big hands probably having problems with keeping their fingers out of the way. Even my rather small pink tends to feel left out when using the mouse while I never had that problem with either of the previously mentioned mice.

Last thing I would like to add is concerning the receiver. Since the MX600 works with normal batteries, it cannot be charged like the MX1000 which has an integrated charger/receiver. This receiver is a lot smaller than that of the MX1000 (MX3100 desktop set) and looks quite simple. Unfortunately, it's also very light and therefore you have to see carefully where you place it and how you lay its cable as otherwise it will be just lingering along on your desk due to the fact that the cable won't let it stay in its place.

With the demise of the MX3100, the MX3000 is the only Wireless desktop set in Logitech's lineup (not counting the design sets). While the keyboard is pretty good, the MX600 mouse is only be suitable for casual gaming.

I've seen the MX3000 on sale for €81,00 and that isn't a bad price but Microsoft's Wireless Desktop Elite is cheaper and includes a better mouse for gaming.

Pro:
  • Good keyboard
  • MX600 has very well-positioned side-buttons

  • Con:
  • MX600 mouse only suitable for casual gaming
  • Zoom buttons on MX600 are quite unhandy
  • Response of certain keys on the keyboard
