God of War 3 Interview

Special by Surion_be
We were invited for a God of War 3 press event where next to testing the game, got the opportunity to sit down with Adam Puhl (Lead Combat Designer) and Chris O'Neill (Senior Designer/ Cronos Designer), and ask them some questions.

During the presentation we got to see the first twenty minutes of the game, with the accompanying developer commentary. We saw how the giant titans were climbing Mount Olympus while Kratos was killing Poseidon on the back of titan Gaia. For me this was one of the most epic boss fights ever in a game and you'll probably agree with me once you have God of War 3 yourselves.

Next to that a demo was played on a big IMAX screen with a surround system that made everything shake when Kratos roared his voice, making everything even more amazing and over-the-top. God of War 3 starts with an explosion and I'm really curious how it will end.

After some food and drinks, of course something with a lot of garlick, it was time to ask the devs some questions:

1. Can you give us an idea of the budget and the size of the team that was necessary for creating God of War 3?
Well the team is over the hundred, probably around the 130 or some and that is build up since God of War II. Budget wise I don´t have any exact numbers (but thanks to Google we know it´s around 44 million Dollar). I am just worried about the gameplay.
2. When did you start developing the third installment of the franchise?
We had three full years of development, but even before that some programmers and artist were working on the God of War II engine to get it work on the Playstation 3 while God of War II was wrapping up. So three years for the whole team and maybe another year on top of that for some of us.
3. How important is the story line in those games?
Storyline is very much a framework for how the game is going to be played trough, where you are going to go, who you are going to encounter and who´s getting in your way. But it´s definitely molded and crafted into a whole package.
4. There is no installation required for the game, how is this possible?
Programmers are awesome! The programming team did actually a lot of optimization the last months for the engine to get it to run really fast and smooth and. Providing us with an engine without loading times to get the most out of this experience is really amazing.

5. Can we expect some kind of DLC or something of that kind for Gof of War III?
We hope so. There is nothing yet decided so we are open for all kind of ideas that make sense for the God of War franchise.
6. Now that the trilogy is over it´s time for vacation? Or are you already working and searching for a new project?
We always have ideas of things that we think that are exciting. A lot of people have been thinking about it the last few years but I think we are all going back to the studio in month or two and figure it out from there.
7. How are you planning on bringing other players who are new with the series? For a lot of new PS3 owners, this will be their first exposure to the God of War franchise.
Not to be a salesman or whatever, but there is the God of War Collection which I am really proud of. It´s actually a fun game remastered fro the PS3 and even though it´s from a previous generation it´s still holds very well. But God of War III doesn't require you to play those games, you´ll completely enjoy this experience and there is actually a really good opening cinematic that we put in the game that tells the back story of the previous games.
8. The scale is certainly impressive. How interactive is the scenery, and how much can you impact the world?
It´s kind of all over it. We have a lot of beautiful set pieces moments with huge boss battles and epic moments, I think we covered everything that´s been done in previous God of War games as well as elevating it to a new level thanks to the Playstation 3.
