Surface – The Complete Series
Rich Connelly went on a diving trip with his brother, to see him get carried away by a huge sea creature he has never seen before. Dr. Laura Daughtery gets goes into the deep with a submarine to find out that at the bottom of the ocean giant mammals have appeared but the government seems to not want to know anything about this. Miles Barnett finds some strange eggs on the water and when he puts in in the recently bought fish tank of his parents, the egg hatches and a strange little creature comes out of it, reaking havoc all around but it looks like Miles has made a bonding with it. These events are all linked to each other and while the government seems to be working hard on a cover-up, Rich, Laura and Miles are about to find out that the world will soon undergo a radical change…
Sound and Vision:
The image quality overall is pretty reasonable but certain scenes are overly rendered which make it feel like you’re watching some bad videogame at times. For the rest there’s little to complain on the image except for some minor aliasing or compression errors here and there.
The sound does a nice job with some good use of the surround speakers while dialogues are crystal clear at all times.
Extras:
– Sci-Fi Special Effects
– Deleted Scenes
Conclusion:
Surface is one of those series that got shut down after one season although there was some real potential present. It’s clear that even during the episodes the studio didn’t quite know what they wanted to do with it. The constant changes of the intro, the sudden plot twists that seem to have come out of nowhere and the increased pace of trying to end the story towards the last three episodes, … it are all examples of the studio breaking a series before it even got the chance to shine.
The acting is at times pretty decent but not constant and in certain scenes you really have the idea that some other actors should have been given a chance. I’m sure that with some better laid out guidelines from the start and a cast that does an overall better performance, Surface could have been a big hit. Now it’s just a nice season with some interesting concepts that will keep you interested but only for 15 episodes.
