Torchwood – Season 1

Gwen Cooper is a member of the local police in Cardiff. One night she’s called out to a murder scene when suddenly people from some special department called “Torchwood” arrive and order everyone to move away as they start their investigation. Gwen is curious to know what Torchwood is doing and goes closer to see what’s happening. As such she sees one of them revive the murder victim for a number of seconds.

Completely astounded by this, Gwen starts investigating what Torchwood is all about and as she progresses, she gets closer and closer and by the time she completely unravels the mystery, she gets offered to join and fight alien threats

Sound and Vision:
The image quality is similar to that of the other BBC sci-fi series, Doctor Who. Nothing spectacular but decent without shining in any department. We didn’t spot any obnoxious compression errors so that’s already a good point.

No good points for the sound though. It’s been a while since we’ve heard such a bad soundtrack even! The dialogues are hollow and it’s like the cast is constantly talking in some sort of empty auditorium with echoes of their words bouncing off the walls. Not that the dialogues are incomprehensible, but some depth to the sound certainly shouldn’t hurt. Truly bad!

Extras:
– Welcome to Torchwood
– Sex, Violence, Blood & Gore
- The Captain’s Log

A total of almost 45 minutes of extras which are nice to check out once but don’t really add much to the show.

Conclusion:
Torchwood is a spin-off series of Doctor Who which is extremely popular all over the world. Torchwood is of similar quality but targets a more adult audience and it shows clearly in this first season: violence, adultery, sex and lesbian/gay relationships are all around! Not that we mind this “darker” atmosphere though, I personally even quite liked it. Unfortunately, the majority of the audience didn’t and the next seasons will be a bit more in line with Doctor Who but until then you can go full-on with this first season that’s got all the nitty-gritty! Definitely one to check out!
