Trick ‘r Treat
It’s Halloween night and lots of people are celebrating (or not). As the night progresses, we follow a young kid wearing a pumpkinhead who goes from door to door, collecting candy and taking care of anyone who doesn’t live up to the spirit of Halloween. As such, we meet a school principal who’s got some murderous tendencies, a couple of girls that are set to party and get one of them to lose her virginity, some kids that get more than they expected when going to the place where years ago a number of retarded kids got killed and an old man who has to face an evil spirit because he doesn’t like Halloween…
Sound and Vision:
The image and sound are just as you would expect from a DVD nowadays. Good images with nice detail, no compression problems and decent levels of black. The sound comes in with a good 5.1 track as well so there’s nothing to complain about.
Extras:
– Trick ‘ Treat: The Lore and Legends of Halloween
– Additional scenes
– Trick ‘r Treat: Season’s Greetings
– Schoolbus comparison scenes with special effects
The first feature is quite interesting as it doesn’t only give interview fragments with cast & crew but also gives insight to where everything surrounding Halloween originated. A very informative extra!
Conclusion:
It’s been years since we’ve seen a decent horror movie that contains multiple different storylines. Creep Show, Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Dark Side, Twilight Zone, … they’ve all come and gone and now we get Trick’r Treat.
Produced by Brian Singer and directed by Michael Dougherty we get to see an excellent cast do a fantastic job in an inspired movie that manages to combine different plots into one story with some unexpected twists. And that without boring the viewer for one second or being overly childish and shallow. The combination of different elements from other horror movies works perfectly and with the interesting extras that are added I can only say that you shouldn’t leave this one laying on store shelves. It’s one of the best direct-to-DVD releases in the genre and a definite must have.
